- c.a.m Monthly Newsletter ...
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Volume I, Issue 1
-
- Compiled by Samuel Ko (kko@sfu.ca), Dec 16, 1992
-
- Hi, first, I'm glad to inform you that the comp.archives.msdos newsgroups
- were created yesterday (Dec 15, 1992) ... Do subscribe them ...
-
- And from now on, I will bring you this c.a.m Newsletter every month (on the
- 15th or 16th) as a "supplement" to my useful-msdos-program list ... Any
- feedbacks are not welcome ... NOT! ...
-
- ** Read the moderated comp.archives.msdos.announce for the latest uploads
- of MSDOS (and, to a lesser extent, Windows) programs and files at
- major ftp sites (Simtel, Garbo, Ulowell, etc) ...
-
- ** And if you want to discuss those recently (and not-so-recently) uploaded
- programs and files, comp.archives.msdos.d is the right group ...
-
- ** Requests for MSDOS archive files ... You can post them to c.a.m.d or
- comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted ... But before you do so, please try to
- consult the master index files at the ftp sites, the c.a.m FAQ list
- (compiled by Timo Salmi) or my useful-msdos-program list _first_ ...
- You don't want other netnews readers to read the same request again and
- again, right? ...
-
- ** A new version of " The Most Useful MSDOS Programs at Simtel20 and Garbo "
- will be out after the semester break (i.e. in early January) ...
- It will be multi-part and multi-format (hypertext, postscript, etc)
- for easier reading ...
-
- ** For the time being, if you want to try something new ... I could
- recommend the EnVision Publisher ... This is a new, easy to use
- and versatile desktop publishing shareware program ... You can
- get it (evp10a.zip + evp10b.zip) in /pub/msdos/deskpub at
- oak.oakland.edu (or other Simtel20 mirrors) ... It's GREAT!!! ...

- Introduction
- ------------
- Welcome to EnVision Publisher, a true WYSIWYG (What You See
- Is What You Get) full-feature desktop publishing program,
- which allows you to design letterheads, resumes, flyers,
- newsletters, greeting cards, brochures, books, and just about
- anything else meant to look good on paper!
-
- Given EnVision Publisher's ease of use and its context-
- sensitive help, you will be able to envision and design your
- own desktop publishing masterpiece in no time at all.
-
- EnVision Publisher is among the most powerful, and yet
- easiest to use desktop publishing (DTP) programs available
- either as shareware or commercially. Simply put, you will not
- find a better desktop publishing program! However, because
- EnVision Publisher is marketed as shareware, we do not have a
- large advertising overhead. This way we can sell EnVision
- Publisher for a fraction of what it would cost if you bought
- one of the commercial DTP programs; and still, with EnVision
- Publisher you get a far more superior program.
-
- Below are some highlights of EnVision Publisher:
-
- EnVision Publisher's Graphical User Interface (GUI),
- resembles a familiar GUI look, with pull-down menus, dialog
- boxes, icons, push buttons, radio buttons, pick lists, check
- boxes, and scroll bars. Its unique 3-D look provides a true
- control panel appearance. EnVision Publisher provides
- detailed context-sensitive and indexed help. To get help, all
- you have to do is press F1, or click on the help icon.
-
- EnVision Publisher has a state of the art scalable font
- technology capable of displaying and printing fonts in any
- size - from a tiny 4 points (0.055 inch) to a huge 108 points
- (1.5 inches). Fonts can be rotated at 90, 180, and 270
- degrees, and filled with any of EnVision Publisher's fill
- patterns. Because the fonts are scalable, each font family is
- encapsulated in a small file (between 20k and 30k), making
- the use of soft fonts totally obsolete. One such file
- contains all font sizes for that font family in all font
- styles (normal, bold, italic, bold-italic). EnVision
- Publisher's fonts use an advanced hinting technology, which
- provides PostScript-like print quality on any printer (laser,
- dot-matrix, inkjet, PostScript).
-
- EnVision Publisher provides WYSIWYG editing at four
- magnification levels (View all, 100%, 200%, 400%), all of
- which are fully editable. The fonts and graphics that you see
- on the screen look exactly like what you will get printed!
-
- EnVision Publisher also provides extensive object drawing and
- importing capabilities. You can draw lines, rectangles,
- circles, ellipses, polygons, polylines, and Bezier Curves.
- The objects can use any of EnVision Publisher's fill and line
- styles in 16 colors or gray-scale levels.
-
- EnVision Publisher also offers complete text, column and text
- block manipulation capabilities. Text blocks can be created
- anywhere on the screen. You have full control over the text
- that goes on the page right down to character level. Each
- character can have any font, style, color, fill, kerning, and
- rotation. Also text lines and paragraphs can be centered,
- left, right, or full justified, and you can choose the line
- leading of your choice.
-
- EnVision Publisher will work on all displays, including VGA,
- EGA, CGA, Hercules, 8414, and SuperVGA.
- EnVision Publisher provides PostScript-like quality printout
- on any printer (laser, dot-matrix, ink-jet, or PostScript).

- ** Or try the latest release of PGP ... PGP is a popular public-key
- encryption program ... It's controversial ... but probably there
- should be no problems at all if you use PGP for non-commercial
- purposes ... It (pgp21.zip) is obtainable by anonymous ftp from
- ghost.dsi.unimi.it (in /pub/security) or garbo.uwasa.fi (in
- /pc/fileutil) ...
-
- ** Telix 3.20 ... the version 3.20 of Telix, one of the best communication
- programs, is out and should be available at ftp sites near you soon ...
- It is the first new release since Telix was sold to deltaComm ...
- (IMNSHO, Telemate 3.10 is still a better choice ...)
-
- From the tlx320.txt
- --
- December 10, 1992 -- Notes on Telix 3.20:
-
- o Telix 3.20 is being released to replace existing copies with
- deltaComm copies, and to introduce some of the most frequently
- requested features internally to Telix.
-
- o File transfer graphic representation bars have been added to all
- protocols. They now display a running presentation of exactly
- how much a file transfer has left to go.
-
- o Transfer estimates are now based on the DCE rather than DTE connect
- speed, making them much more reliable. Your modem must return
- the DCE speed as the first number after the connect string to
- take advantage of this feature.
-
- o Added a "script learning" feature to the registered version.
-
- o Telix can now Swap to EMS/XMS/disk on a DOS Shell as an option.
-
- o Added a fifth external protocol, and added "Auto-download"
- triggers for all external protocols. If your external protocols
- have strings that uniquely identify an incoming file, such as
- HS/Link, you may now enjoy the automation of Zmodem on these
- externals as well.
-
- o Added "Reverse Terminal Emulation" for European users. RTE
- reverses the order of emulation and translate tables, so that 7
- bit systems that use the left bracket key as a remap key may now
- work properly with ANSI and VT terminals.
-
- o Telix is forced to correct the version= line in TELIX.CNF if it
- is incorrect. This should make the check of this variable by
- third party scripts much more reliable.
-
- o The SALT dial function now returns the proper value when the
- dialing is aborted by the user.
-
- o Changed the character used by Telix when remote aborts transfers
- to thus avoiding placing a Control-Z into the capture file.
-
- o Corrected Zmodem cps rates to reflect more accurate (faster) rates.
-
- o Added /D command line parameter which lowers RTS on disk writes.
- If you are getting a CRC error when your system writes to disk,
- try using this option.
-
- o Added a second, simple scripting language for non-programmers,
- called SIMPLE. SALT remains untouched -- SIMPLE is an English ->
- SALT translator. Complete docs on SIMPLE are enclosed.
-
- o Added a BBS-calibre Host mode (doors, multiple message areas, etc)
- formerly known as HOST 5.0 from Host Software Products. It is
- now an integral part of Telix.
-
- o File tagging for uploading files -- up to 100 files per transfer
- -- has been added and extended to external protocols as well.

- ** Hpack ... version 0.78 is available from /pc/arcers at garbo or the
- corresponding directories of its mirror sites ... Even hpack compresses
- files (very) slowly, it's worth a look ...
-
- ** Jed ... version 0.7 is out ... Jed is yet another emacs-look-alike
- editor for Unix, VMS and MSDOS ... Get jed070.zip from /pub/jed
- at amy.tch.harvard.edu ... It's worth a try ...
-
- ** BGFT ... version 3.0 is out ... It is still the best MSDOS program
- that allows you to do almost anything during file transfer ... (even
- though it doesn't support Zmodem) ... Look for bgft300a.zip + bgft300b.zip
- in /pub/msdos/modem at oak.oakland.edu (or other Simtel20 mirrors)
-
- ** HyperDisk ... The newest version of this useful disk cache program is 4.51
- and can be found in the file spkt451s.zip (in /pub/msdos/dskutl at oak)
-
- ** mcafee.com ... this is the official ftp site of McAfee Associates
- where you can find their latest anti-virus programs (scan*, clean*) or
- other McAfee utilities (e.g. you can find ccp11.zip (a new version of
- the system security program) in /pub/utility) ...
-
- ** FAQ of the month: How to decompress *.Z or *.tar or *.tar.Z on the PC?
- Answer ... (please don't ask this again :)
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Program: Unix-compatible 16bit Compress/Uncompress/Zcat
- Version: 4.30
- Upload Date: 90/10/13
- File: comp430d.zip
- Size: 20,241 bytes
- Location: oak.oakland.edu: /pub/msdos/compress
- garbo.uwasa.fi: /pc/unix
- Status: Public Domain
- Comment: For extracting/making Unix *.Z files ...
- The best thing to do is to copy comp430d.exe to compress.exe,
- uncompre.exe and zcat.exe ... To uncompress a *.Z file, simply
- type uncompre(ss) *.Z ...
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Program: Tar (tape archiver) ...
- Version: -
- Upload Date: (to garbo) 90/03/21
- File: tar4dos.zoo
- Size: 36,824 bytes
- Location: oak.oakland.edu: /pc/filutl (as tar4dos.zip)
- garbo.uwasa.fi: /pc/unix
- Status: Public Domain
- Comment: This is the most Unix-compatible tar clone for DOS ...
- To untar a *.tar file ... enter tar xvf *.tar ...
