  16.   IJCAI'93 Workshop on Using Knowledge in its Context

  19.   Context of the proposal:
  20.   Advances in multidisciplinary research are leading
  21.   towards a new  generation of intelligent assistant
  22.   systems which are context-sensitive.It is hypothe-
  23.   sized that 'knowledge' has a contextual component.
  24.   If  its  importance is  acknowledged ,  contextual
  25.   component  is  rarely  represented  explicitly  in
  26.   available knowledge representations , and not used
  27.   in subsequent processing  of knowledge. There is a
  28.   gap  between what is known  and what is done . For
  29.   instance , this situation is particularly critical
  30.   for  intelligent assistant systems where knowledge
  31.   in context is a key component. Thus , acquisition,
  32.   representation   and exploitation of  knowledge in
  33.   context would have a major contribution in all IAS
  34.   areas such as  knowledge representation, knowledge
  35.   acquisition,explanation,maintenance,documentation,
  36.   learning , human-computer  communication and vali-
  37.   dation / verification. A computational  capability
  38.   that understand,represent and reason about context
  39.   will  be very  valuable and of immense  benefit to
  40.   many AI problems.

  42.   Goal :
  43.   This workshop will  bring together  leading resear-
  44.   chers involved in the notion of context and its use
  45.   in advanced information systems . The workshop will 
  46.   focus  on computational  principles and  mechanisms
  47.   for eliciting, modelling, and using  the contextual
  48.   aspect of knowledge,as well as techniques and tools
  49.   for contructing  context-sensitive systems. We will
  50.   address the  problem  through questions relevant to
  51.   the theme of knowledge in context such as: 
  52.   - What is context ? 
  53.   - How the notion of context can be modeled? 
  54.   - How context can be encapsulated in representation
  55.     formalisms? 
  56.   - What are the  cognitive  aspects  linked  to  the
  57.     notion of context?
  58.   - How  does  context  influence human dialogues and
  59.     how can it be taken into account in IASs?
  60.   - How to  exploit the  notion of  context in human-
  61.     computer interaction ( assistance to user, expla-
  62.     nations, etc.)?
  63.   - What is  the role of  the notion of  context in a
  64.     computer-supported cooperative work?  
  65.  
  66.   The  workshop  will be  open to  participants  from
  67.   different  disciplines such as , cognitive science,
  68.   knowledge  representation , knowledge  acquisition,
  69.   explanations,knowledge assimilation, human computer
  70.   interaction and navigation. Topics may concern (but
  71.   not limited to):
  72.   - context-sensitive explanations (from experts,from
  73.     documents)
  74.   - context-sensitive human computer interaction(user
  75.     model, visualisation, navigation aid, cooperative
  76.     explanation) , acquisition and  representation of
  77.     knowledge in context (domain expert, document)
  78.   - context-sensitive information document management
  79.   - context- sensitive  architecture  of  the  system
  80.     (customisable & flexible, situated agents)

  88.   Participants will be selected on  the basis of sub-
  89.   mitted papers (10 pages maximum). Four paper copies
  90.   are required. Papers must include: author's name(s),
  91.   affiliation, complete address mailing,phone and fax
  92.   number, and e-mail.

  94.   Preprints will be mailed to participants before the
  95.   workshop  in order to work  before the workshop, by
  96.   e-mail if possible . Our aim is  that  participants
  97.   present a synthetical or controversal point of view
  98.   of that work.  The workshop will  be limited  to 30
  99.   active participants. Additional information will be
  100.   sent by the chair person on request.
