- Attention TECH's!
-
- Barbara Baughman and I have been putting together the sessions for
- NUGM93. Following is our preliminary list of sessions. We do need
- feedback on other sessions or sessions that should be dropped. The
- newly proposed "communications track" is pretty lean so far, and we
- especially need some input in that area.
-
- As I will be out of the office beginning Friday, 18 December until
- after New Years, Barbara has graciously consented to be the contact
- person for the planning. Her address is:
-
- University of Texas at Dallas
- (214) 690-2157
- BAUGHMAN@UTDALLAS.EDU
-
- I ask two things of you: 1) if you have other suggestions, please
- forward them to Babs, and 2) if you would like to (or feel morally
- compelled to) volunteer as either moderator or presenter for any
- sessions, please contact Babs.
-
- Session: Troubleshooting 5.1
- There was a session like this after 5.0 was out, and it was
- extremely helpful as a forum for TECH1's to voice problems they
- were having and getting advise for all the TECH1's there and NSI
- folks. If you have installed 5.1: do you think this will be
- necessary/helpful? Or is it so easy that we can skip it?
-
- Session: Tuning CICS
- Center the discussion this time on using the shutdown stats to tune
- the LMS system. Split into MVS & VSE (?)
-
- Session: Managing the Patron Files
- Explain how LB510 works, how it ties to online circulation, how it
- interfaces with LB610. ( A long session)
-
- Session: Disaster Recovery
- Key on planning for backup recovery & backup schedules. Supplement
- with a poster session.
-
- Sessions: VSE SIG meeting
- SAS SIG meeting
- MVS SIG meeting
-
- Session:CICS Debugging
- An elementary view. Give a long session to allow time for some in-
- depth discussion of the basics and lots of questions. I wasn't
- able to attend this session last year. Did you? Was it helpful?
-
- Session: Using Quick Reports
- It would be nice to get some experience from sites who receive this
- new product (if anyone actually receives it).
-
- Session: Exploring the Mysteries of LB610
- How it puts together reports, which fields are updated in the
- patron, item, and action index, how it relates to online
- operations.
-
- Session: User Defined Exits
- Where they are allowed, how to implement, other considerations. We
- think this should be more oreiented toward how to implement User
- Defined Exits, and possibly include a list of available user exits
- and what to do with them.
-
- Session: CICS Monitoring and Utilities
- This was a terrific session last NUGM. Doug Sinnot: Are you
- available for an encore performance?
-
- Session: Tracing an L? transaction
- For the past few years, the programmer track has had a session on
- tracing a NOTIS transaction. It seems we've been through LC and
- LT. How about a trace of an OPAC transaction? And what about
- Jerry Specht to do the explaining?
-
- Session: VSAM Tuning
- Concentrate on looking at the LISTVCAT for the files and tuning
- from it.
-
- Session: Troubleshooting for Beginners
- This is a traditional session. It was very useful for me when I was
- a beginner.
-
- Session: Developing Local Documentation for JCL
- Or 'What our Data Center Needs'. Ideas on documenting for the data
- center information about batch jobs and file recovery. Supplement
- with a poster session.
-
- Session: Index File Structures
- This has been repeated the last 2 NUGMS. It doesn't really present
- new information, but it's very useful information that NSI still
- doesn't document. (File logic behind the compressed index files).
-
- Session: Batch Job Scheduling
- General Recommendations for batch jobs, statistical reports, when
- to tell that a batch job really needs to be run (using LB305 to get
- split count). Supplement with a poster session.
-
- Session: Internet for Non-Internet & Beginners
- This was an interesting topic at the last NUGM that I didn't get to
- attend. Should it be repeated?
-
- Session: How to get on NOTIS-L
- How to get access to NOTIS-L if you don't already have it.
-
- Session: Keeping track of local modifications
-
- Session: User enhancements written in COBOL
-
- Session: Principles of TCP/IP Networking
-
- Session: Ask the Experts
- A chance for new TECH1's to get some tips and ask questions of
- experienced TECH1's. Try to find panel members that could help
- with communications, systems problems, setting up batch, disaster
- recovery. We had a request for a session geared to helping TECH1's
- just getting started - and this is seemed a good way to do that.
-
-
- Session: Task Management Techniques/Software (Project Management
- Technologies) for technical support.
-
- Session: LSYS/LMST and LCRFILE/LMS
- Technical explanation of how LSYS controls access to particular
- fields & why particular weird relationships exist...esp. item
- record security...by NOTIS staff. Also...architectural/functional
- relationships of LMST/LSYS modules showing dependencies, sequence
- of updating processes, pitfalls, hints, etc. in setting up
- security.
-
- Session: Issues unique to large sites
- A long session.
-
- Session: Modifying the tag table
- How to do it (cookbook) and discuss the pitfalls/ramifications for
- online system/merged headings index.
-
- OK: That's it so far.
-
- Thanks for the overwhelming response I know we will get!
