- Howdy All,
- The present barb toss betwixt Christopher Traynor
- <traynorc@PHIBRO.COM> & Jim Goes <goes@chimera.sph.umn.edu> versus
- michael@AFS.COM and his vitriolic response to
- Michael_Pizolato@afs.com's postscript question presents an
- opportunity for me to raise the level of this discussion.
-
- To wit:
- NeXTstep brings many users bassackwards into UNIX.
- And therefore simple UNIX issues loom large until they are at long
- last understood.
-
- In my case, I echewed all computers based on my IBM mainframe work
- experiences 12 years ago (IBM 3033, 8 Meg liquid cooled memory) until
- the Macintosh arrived, and then I moved directly into NeXT.
- I admit I could ls with the best of them and maybe mkdir (if I had a
- manual nearby) before I sat before a 0.8 NeXTcube, but for all
- practical purposes the only UNIX I know comes directly from my NeXT
- experience.
-
- Thus I know tons about NetInfo binding and propagating,
- interapplication messaging, remote application execution, but mounts,
- especially mount errors, still throw me for a loop --and ttys? forget
- it; it's opaque to me.
-
- So I have great empathy for any simple UNIX question and wish for a
- great 'intro to UNIX' book.
- Yes I'm thankful for Nemeth-Snyder-Seebass' UNIX System
- Administration Handbook,
- UNIX for the Impatient,
- Life With UNIX, & even
- NeXT beautiful new 3.0 Sysadmin reference
- But there still is not a true overview to NeXT's bsdmachunix, nor
- enough cogent examples in the man pages therein.
- Until two years of UNIX courses are prerequisite to a NeXT purchase,
- these questions will bubble up. Let's welcome them, and generate
- better reference material.
