  13. Small minded is an understatement.  This is the "Tragedy of the
  14. Commons" once again, where groups argue counterproductively over
  15. greater shares of the public square.  It's sad...
  16. This may indeed be the fate of "multicultural diversity" as an issue
  17. Rather than build coalitions, it may be likely that tensions over
  18. power will surface, pitting one group against another.  This is the
  19. fate of diversity on many college campuses now.
  20. I think that the arguement presented here also reveals the author's
  21. concealed racial bigotry by invoking racial/ethnic identity when it
  22. is convenient to do so.  Not only does it weaken the struggle against
  23. racism to do so, but it also weakens the struggle against homophobia
  24. and discrimination against the gay/lesbian community.  The wisdom of
  25. moving the ALA meeting away from Colorado because of the recent referen-
  26. dum ought to be argued, judged, and acted upon on the strength of its
  27. own merits, of which there are many.
  28. Again, a sad statement in my view.
