- I teach graduate students in counseling about the necessity of ally work.
- The need to the interconnections of all the oppressions. Racism is related
- to classism, sexism to homophobia and heterosexism, ablism to ageism, ant-
- semitism to classism and racism... I could go on and on. For people of color
- and other oppressed groups not to be outraged about the Colorado situation is
- a real lack of insight into the problem and construction of oppression. It was
- laws like the Colorado situation which kept African Americans in slaved and
- later second class citizens; let us hope as we live out the final days of our
- captivity we will give up using the "master's tools" of disdain for difference
- and divide and conquer. We must form alliances with those who have been
- oppressed by this system of differential privilege based on race, class, gender
- and sexual orientation. Remember one in ten persons is gay. We each have a
- gay relative hiding his/her sexual orientation from us for fear of rejection.
- As Spike Lee would say about race issues Think, wake up.
