-
- HOW TO GET DOCUMENTS FROM VITA'S DISTRIBUTION SERVICE
-
- Please keep these instructions handy.
-
-
- 1. FTP Method
-
- Papers and other documents contributed to VITA's Distribution Service are
- available directly on line. If possible, you should use the Internet File-
- Transfer Protocol, usually called Anonymous FTP. If you don't have FTP, please
- skip to the next section.
-
- When you request files from an FTP server. they are transferred immediately and
- at high speed (about 300 kB per minute) to your current directory. Our FTP
- server is called 155.135.1.1 or DHVX20.CSUDH.EDU. (Please don't send your
- requests to VITA's address.) Our files are in a subdirectory called
- anonymous.vita . Here are the steps to get a file called VITA_INDEX.TXT , that
- lists the available files.
-
- Let's suppose your system prompt looks like this: $ . First, enter this
- command, using capitals or small letters:
-
- $ FTP 155.135.1.1 (or FTP DHVX20.CSUDH.EDU)
-
- At the prompt "Name:" , enter ANONYMOUS
-
- At the prompt "Password:" , enter YOUR OWN e-mail address in domain format;
- for example, myname@node.domain . It will not show on the screen.
-
- At the prompt * , enter:
-
- * GET [.VITA]VITA_INDEX.TXT
-
- You can, instead, change to the vita directory with the command: CD VITA, use
- DIR to view the list of files, and get the file with GET VITA_INDEX.TXT .
-
- To exit the system, enter QUIT or BYE; your own system prompt will appear.
-
-
- 2. E-mail methods for persons lacking direct access to FTP.
-
- Note: VITA is not the operator of the servers described below.
-
- 2.1 Send your message to this address: FTPMAIL@DECWRL.DEC.COM .
- Please do not send it to VITA. You may complete the "Subject:" line or
- leave it blank.
-
- Your message will name the files you want to retrieve and the address to which
- they should be sent as e-mail messages. You must use the format shown below,
- omitting the material in curly brackets {}. You may use capitals or small
- letters:
-
- reply <your_own_e-mail_ address> {Omit the angle brackets <>}
- connect dhvx20.csudh.edu {this is the archive server}
- get [.vita]vita_index.txt
- get <file_specification_2> {you can use up to 10 get
- get <file_specification_3> commands}
- quit {that's all!}
-
- 2.2 A similar method will work if you have a BITNET, NetNorth, or EARN
- address. Address your message to bitftp@pucc . The message text should be as
- follows:
-
- FTP dhvx20.csudh.edu
- USER anonymous get [.vita]vita_index.txt
- get <file_specification_2> {you can use up to 10 get
- get <file_specification_3> commands}
- quit
-
-
- 3. Using the Global Networking subdirectory.
-
- More good news! Another subdirectory on the same server contains papers
- dealing with networking in developing nations, covering both technology and
- applications. To change to the Global Networking subdirectory from the vita
- subdirectory, enter CD [ANONYMOUS.GLOBAL_NET] . To change to it from the root
- directory, just enter CD GLOBAL_NET. Once in, you can type DIR to show the
- filenames. Some files appear in both subdirectories. You can GET any file in
- the global_net subdirectory. You should GET the index file; it is called
- index.txt . Global_net is ably managed by Larry Press <lpress@isi.edu>, not
- VITA.
-
-
- 4. Other FTP Options.
-
- To retrieve only the abstract of a document, GET <file_name>.ABS.
-
- To retrieve the full document, GET <file_name>.TXT.
-
- To see a list of commands, HELP.
-
- Problems using the system? Send a human-readable e-mail message to this
- address: gnet_request@dhvx20.csudh.edu .
-
- For a detailed description of the ftpmail servers, send this e-mail message:
- help to <ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com> and <bitftp@pucc>.
-
- If you have *other* comments or questions, please send your message to me at
- any address shown below.
