- OED2 network version
-
- With reference to contravening the licence for the standalone
- version, I repeat what I said on 27 November:
-
- "The standalone version of the OED2 on CD-ROM is intended for
- use on a single PC and should not be mounted on a network. This
- is explicit in the licence agreement that is shipped with the
- publication. Use of the standalone version on a network contravenes
- the terms of that licence. If you want to access the CD-ROM on a
- network you MUST buy the site licence appropriate to the number of
- users supported by that network.
- For full information on the availability of the network version
- (which will be for Novell 3.11 networks), please get in touch with
- our Customer Sales Manager, Janet Caldwell, email OUPJSC @ the same
- address as mine, tel. 0865-267979."
-
- I should have added that for US customers, the contact is our office
- in New York (Royalynn O'Connor, tel. (212) 679 7300; no email). All
- US sales go through New York not through Oxford, consequently I have
- no knowledge of any arrangement Cindy Harper may have made with NY,
- but will advise them of her message to CDROMLAN.
-
- To run the network version you will need: Novell 3.11 network; client
- PCs with 80386 processor, VGA monitor, 2 Mb free RAM, IPX/NETX
- version 3.x, DOS 3.0 or higher, Windows 3.1; the Novell server
- should have an 80386 processor, 3 Mb free RAM, Netware 386, DOS 3.0
- or higher.
-
- It is true that the network version is not yet available -- this
- is still being tested and some further revisions are to be made
- to it before we can ship. Not least among these revisions is the
- implementation of a checking mechanism that detects use of the
- software on the network to ensure that the terms of that particular
- site licence are being observed. It is rapidly becoming apparent
- to us that it is imperative that we do this in order to protect
- our software.
-
- If you have purchased only the standalone version and have succeeded in
- getting to run on your network, you are in clear breach of the licence
- agreement unless you have individually come to an arrangement with
- Oxford or one of our branch offices to do this. If you have copied
- the documentation supplied with the standalone version to support
- use of the application on a network, then you are breaching the
- copyright of the manual, which carries its own ISBN and can be
- purchased separate from the package.
-
- I have to say that it makes me very sad to have to spell this out.
- I would have thought that it went without saying that you must
- keeps within the terms of the licence you accepted when you first
- opened the shrink wrapping on the package.
