- No matter how much time passes, I still think people are going to believe
- Lovecraft's invention _The_Necronomicon_ is for real. I happen to be a big
- Lovecraft fan, and the confusion his hoax has caused makes me respect the
- man all the more. His blending of existing occult deities with his own,
- along with all the nifty rites and rituals described in the book (I own a
- paperback copy) make it seem believable...and people really *want* to think
- it's true, no matter how often they're told otherwise. I have fun showing
- my copy to friends...they gasp and carry on, it's hilarious. :)
- I've read numerous interviews with King Diamond in the past, but I've
- personally never heard him mention the book. He has talked about having
- powers like levitation and such, though. Just as silly. King Diamond more
- than any other metal artist has endlessly talked about how he's one of the
- few "serious" satanists. And, some of the stuff he has said is quite true
- of satanism (self-fulfillment, living by your animal nature rather than
- supressing impulses and adopting restricting morals). But a lot of other
- things he's said are pretty stupid. I'm a doubter by habit, and I think
- 99% of what you see (with regards to satanism in metal) is hooey. :)
- One more thing : I don't happen to put a lot of importance on lyrics.
- I could care less if they sing about one thing or another, as long as the
- vocalist doesn't sound wimpy (it must blend, not contrast, the music).
- Some of my friends say they don't listen to death/speed/thrash/etc. because
- the vocals cannot [normally] be understood. This doesn't bother me in the
- least...the music itself is the reason I'm *in* to this form of music...
- it's complex in most cases, and is a great way to release energy. I get
- bored real fast with almost all other forms of music, except some classical.
- Vocalists like Chris Barnes, Frank Mullen, and Chuck Schuldiner (he was at
- his peak on Leprosy) really fit perfectly with the music. Joey Belladona
- did NOT fit in on Among The Living (the only good Anthrax album IMHO)...the
- music really needed a more powerful (lower-pitched, shouting, maybe like
- Philip Anselmo) singer. So there you have it, my opinion on lyrics and
- vocals. :)
- My final point : does it really matter? Who cares if they're really
- satanists or not? If they live next door to you, maybe it would, but other-
- wise I can't see any importance. A curiousity, perhaps...but surely you
- all can see the selling power of it! Controversy always increases sales. :)
- Later!
