  14. Searching around for evidence that BT offers the most expensive
  15. telephone service in Europe (the conjecture comes originally from
  16. Private Eye, and I have no doubt that it is true) I turned up the fact
  17. that, with a fair wind, a three-minute LOCAL call can cost you \pounds
  18. 1.81.

  20. The trick is to reverse the charges.  The call, of course, involves
  21. exactly the same amount of work as setting up any other operator
  22. connected local call (20p), but since the caller is likely to be in
  23. difficulties or urgent need, BT multiplies the price by about nine.
