  14. Although I cannot comment on individual adverts, generally, there is no
  15. scam involved here.  I have a carphone that was reposessed several months
  16. ago.  I wanted to reconnect this phone.

  18. The company I approached had an account opened with CELLNET and a 
  19. ID code for the 'phone released.  The 'phone is programmable using a PROM2
  20. programmer and they simply "taught" it the new code which it now works with.

  22. There is nothing shady in this at all.  For this service I was charged 10.00
  23. which I think is fairly cheap.  The reason for this is that the source of income
  24. for these companies is the commission they receive from the airtime companies.  It
  25. is for this reason that many delaers now offer a "free" carphone with each
  26. airtime contract.

  28. Incidentally, the only service which IS illegal is programming two mobile 'phones
  29. with the same ID.  Recently BT investigators and the police have found thousands of
  30. 'phones like this in London.  These are often sold as "working for a couple of months",
  31. obviously until the ownwer of the real 'phone finds numbers on his bill which he hasn't
  32. dialled.  This said, for people like me, with two 'phones which are not brand new, this
  33. is a nusiance.  I have a fixed carphone and an NEC P3 portable.  It would be nice if
  34. they shared the same number, but as this is illegal, it is impossible to find someone
  35. to do it <GRIN> even if I wanted to.
