  17. Well, since you asked, I'll give you my definitions of atheist and
  18. agnostic.  They may not be strict dictionary definitions :-)

  20. The Theist: Someone willing to make the 'leap of faith', and believe
  21. in supernatural entities (perhaps 'supernatural' is too strong a term)
  22. without evidence.

  25. without feeling the need to justify their belief to other people. I've
  26. always thought that those theists who feel pressed to defend their
  27. faith are exactly the theists who don't really understand what faith
  28. is.]

  30. Agnostic: Someone who applies normal evidence-based reasoning to their
  31. lives, but reserves judgement on religious matters. An agnostic would
  32. be quick to dismiss extraterrestrials, the tooth fairy, and
  33. intelligent marshmallows for lack of solid evidence, but the agnostic
  34. usually gives special consideration to religious issues, stating
  35. instead that we don't know or can't know.

  37. "Soft" Atheist: The "soft" atheist subjects all things to the same
  38. evidence-based reasoning, without reserving judgement for anything. To
  39. the soft atheist, God, Yahweh, Allah, Vishnu, and whatever go in to
  40. exactly the same classification as the tooth fairy and
  41. extraterrestrials. To the soft atheist, the Bible is NOT evidence for
  42. the existence of God, any more than a physics textbook is evidence for
  43. the existence of gravity, or Tolkein is evidence for the existence of
  44. elves.

  48. "Hard" Atheist: The "hard" atheist sees religion as a specifically
  49. perpetrated deception on the part of powerful religious and secular
  50. figures.  While some hard atheists will agree that the originators of
  51. a particular religion were well-intentioned (if wrong), a hard atheist
  52. suggests that the myth of a God (or Yahweh, or whatever) is maintained
  53. exclusively to keep religous figures in power, and to proliferate
  54. their own political and moral views.

  57. certainly not hard to see where a hard atheist could get his or her
  58. views!]
