-
- Correct. This used to be a southeastern part of Estonia. And the general
- feeling in Estonia about this area is that it is felt to be a greater loss
- than the areas in the northeastern part (behind Narva). The area is also
- significantly larger than the northeastern.
-
- However, I am afraid that these areas are lost to Estonia forever - except
- (in case of sheer luck) Russia agrees to not claim some small parts of
- the area - I do not expect they are ready to accept the pre-WWII borders.
- And Estonia is not pressing Russia to return the areas, feeling
- the probable futility of such attempts. Still, it is not considered to
- be absolutely impossible either.
-
- An additional comment to people not knowing much of the geography
- there: why did Russia take areas in the northeast and southeast, but not
- in the middle? Answer: the area in the middle consists of a big lake
- (called Peipsi).
