  28.   1) I don't think I missed the point.  2) I'm 31 years old, and make no
  29. special claims about wisdom.  Finally, I don't understand why you're
  30. bringing up the CIA when I was defending the Secret Service, and
  31. in particular its role in protecting the President.  I am well aware
  32. of CIA abuses in the countries you mention, as well as several
  33. others.  Only the most ideologically blindered right-wingers
  34. try to deny the role the CIA has played in subverting democratic
  35. movements, assassinating labor leaders, politicians, and human rights
  36. activists, and installing, bankrolling, and protecting viciously
  37. tyrannical governments throughout the developing world.  But, likewise,
  38. the most frothing irrational leftists seem to be unable to distinguish
  39. between the abuses in the almost-unmonitored military/intelligence
  40. apparatus allowed and encouraged by Republican administrations versus
  41. the legitimate US governmental institutions which are worth defending.

  43.   In other words, it is all too easy to look at the actions of
  44. scum like Casey, Elliot Abrams, Poindexter, John Negroponte,
  45. etc. and throw up your hands and say "our entire f***ing society and
  46. government are corrupt and evil beyond redemption and Bush and Clinton
  47. and any other president are all scum and unworthy of protection and
  48. the Secret Service is really just the Gestapo in more boring
  49. uniforms".  It's the lazy way out.  The apparatus and tools of government
  50. and national security are not *inherently* evil -- they have been
  51. abused savagely during the last 45 years (to say the least), but
  52. let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
