- There is a "drug awareness" thing going on upstairs, and they are
- passing out many brochures about many drugs. The one entitled
- "Facts about Cannabis (Marijuana, hashish, etc.)" was reprinted
- from the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, and revised
- in June, 1985. It says, in part, :
-
- "Cannabis impairs attention, short-term memory, logical thinking,
- and the ability to drive a car or perform other complex tasks."
-
- Is this actually documented anywhere, or is it the subjective
- opinion of someone?
-
- I was participating in some driving research about 20 years ago,
- and overheard the principle investigator mention something about
- the effects of cannabis, saying something like "Well, the case of
- marijuana is well known...." - implying there indeed was some
- solid scientific research done into driving while under the
- influence of cannabis.
-
- Has anyone in this group checked into these things ?
-
- It seems that the case for making cannabis illegal because of
- potential impairment while driving is not logical, because,
- (1) we already have laws against impaired driving, which should be
- independent of the means of becoming impaired, and (2) it is not
- the use of the drug, but the driving, that is at fault. (Actually,
- 1 and 2 are probably the same point...) - But it is like throwing
- out the baby with the bathwater.
-
- However, what about this short-term memory impairment? (1) is it true?
- (2) Is this sufficient grounds to make it (or keep it) illegal? I
- always thought mj should be legal based upon the "it's none of your
- business what I do as long as I don't hurt you" type of argument
- (that I think stems from reading The Playboy Philosopy all those
- years ago - but which has grown into an objectivist opinion that
- it is immoral and should be illegal if anything should be illegal
- to initiate the use of force against anybody.).
-
- Comments, anybody ?
