  11. There is a "drug awareness" thing going on upstairs, and they are
  12. passing out many brochures about many drugs. The one entitled
  13. "Facts about Cannabis (Marijuana, hashish, etc.)" was reprinted
  14. from the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, and revised
  15. in June, 1985. It says, in part, :

  17. "Cannabis impairs attention, short-term memory, logical thinking,
  18. and the ability to drive a car or perform other complex tasks."

  20. Is this actually documented anywhere, or is it the subjective 
  21. opinion of someone?

  23. I was participating in some driving research about 20 years ago,
  24. and overheard the principle investigator mention something about
  25. the effects of cannabis, saying something like "Well, the case of
  26. marijuana is well known...."   - implying there indeed was some
  27. solid scientific research done into driving while under the
  28. influence of cannabis.

  30. Has anyone in this group checked into these things ?

  32. It seems that the case for making cannabis illegal because of 
  33. potential impairment while driving is not logical, because,
  34. (1) we already have laws against impaired driving, which should be
  35. independent of the means of becoming impaired, and (2) it is not
  36. the use of the drug, but the driving, that is at fault. (Actually,
  37. 1 and 2 are probably the same point...) - But it is like throwing
  38. out the baby with the bathwater.

  40. However, what about this short-term memory impairment? (1) is it true?
  41. (2) Is this sufficient grounds to make it (or keep it) illegal? I 
  42. always thought mj should be legal based upon the "it's none of your
  43. business what I do as long as I don't hurt you" type of argument
  44. (that I think stems from reading The Playboy Philosopy all those
  45. years ago - but which has grown into an objectivist opinion that
  46. it is immoral and should be illegal if anything should be illegal
  47. to initiate the use of force against anybody.).
