- Employment is not the criterion for economic status categorizing. GNP growth
- is. The USA has had six consecutive quarters of growth. The categorization is
- not two-tiered based on income level.
-
- Employment cutbacks make news because they're (a) sensational news and (b)
- done en masse. Hirings are less dramatic and are done in smaller lots. Most
- job creation is done by non-Fortune-500 firms. Now, which makes better copy?
-
- "GM announces plant closing/2000 idled"
-
- or a bunch of two-liners like
- "Arcane Software Inc. hires twelve in product development"
-
- Negative reporting is easier and flashier, and not just economic/financial
- reporting.
