  30. Don't get me wrong -- I like beauty and wonder as much as the next
  31. person.  And if I ever have kids, I certainly hope to experience the
  32. beauty and wonder you refer to.

  34. On the other hand, being a droll, tiresome, scientific-rationalist-
  35. reductionist type, I will undoubtedly pause after the proceedings to
  36. do a typical evolutionist's gedanken experiment:

  38.     - assume two evolving strands of humans;
  39.  
  40.     - and that one strand has more pronounced feelings of beauty and
  41.       wonder over childbirth than the other;
  42.  
  43.     - and that this difference has even the flimsiest genetic basis;
  44.  
  45.     - all other things being equal, which strand will predominate?
  46.  
  47. If there is a God, I would be surprised if he/she/it would arrange for a
  48. miracle each time, when other approaches would probably work just as well.
