- Don't get me wrong -- I like beauty and wonder as much as the next
- person. And if I ever have kids, I certainly hope to experience the
- beauty and wonder you refer to.
-
- On the other hand, being a droll, tiresome, scientific-rationalist-
- reductionist type, I will undoubtedly pause after the proceedings to
- do a typical evolutionist's gedanken experiment:
-
- - assume two evolving strands of humans;
-
- - and that one strand has more pronounced feelings of beauty and
- wonder over childbirth than the other;
-
- - and that this difference has even the flimsiest genetic basis;
-
- - all other things being equal, which strand will predominate?
-
- If there is a God, I would be surprised if he/she/it would arrange for a
- miracle each time, when other approaches would probably work just as well.
