  20. I was in this position about 6.5 years ago, when I moved from the East Coast,
  21. where I'd spent my whole life, to Beautiful Downtown Silicon Valley. The first
  22. few months were pretty rough, since the only people I knew were some friends
  23. from school who had graduated earlier, and had already established lives. But
  24. then I found a social support system. The funny thing was, it was.....USENET.

  26. Ok, the net was much smaller and somewhat friendlier at the time (I started
  27. before the great renaming :-), and I happened to be located in an area with
  28. a high proportion of net.folks. I ended up meeting a lot of people via the 
  29. net, and they still make up the vast majority of my friends. And email makes
  30. arranging social outings just that much easier :-).

  32. I can't say I like the climate any better (dammit, I want *weather*!! :-),
  33. and the bagels are still too small, but by meeting folks and making friends
  34. I've been amazingly happy here.
