- I was in this position about 6.5 years ago, when I moved from the East Coast,
- where I'd spent my whole life, to Beautiful Downtown Silicon Valley. The first
- few months were pretty rough, since the only people I knew were some friends
- from school who had graduated earlier, and had already established lives. But
- then I found a social support system. The funny thing was, it was.....USENET.
-
- Ok, the net was much smaller and somewhat friendlier at the time (I started
- before the great renaming :-), and I happened to be located in an area with
- a high proportion of net.folks. I ended up meeting a lot of people via the
- net, and they still make up the vast majority of my friends. And email makes
- arranging social outings just that much easier :-).
-
- I can't say I like the climate any better (dammit, I want *weather*!! :-),
- and the bagels are still too small, but by meeting folks and making friends
- I've been amazingly happy here.
