- That's the part which creates the problem. Many of these counties are a
- distance BUT more importantly (at least in New York) the era from 1785
- to roughly 1820 found county lines shifting continually as areas were
- reformed. Logically one would think that land, for instance, would be
- recorded in its current jurisdiction, with older records moved to it. Yet
- I've been told that land records are with the county where the land was
- originally deeded at the time it was recorded. When ownership changed the
- deed was recorded in the new jurisdiction. Thus in which county would
- death records be, the county at the time of death, or the county of
- current jurisdiction. It gets real messy.
