  3. For some time I feel like I've been butting my head against a stone wall.
  4. In trying to trace one line of lineage I can not find the link to the
  5. previous generation.  Am looking for ideas,suggestions for other searching.
  6. The story:
  7.  
  8. According to the family bible,
  9.         John P. Dye b. RI 1764 m.
  10.         Sallie Rhodes b. 1777
  11.         Place and time of marriage unknown. They had one son,
  12.         Rouse Simmons Dye b. 1802 in DeRuyter NY. He m.
  13.         Ximina Hull (b.1804 in Fabius NY) 1833 and moved to Jefferson Co.NY
  14.         The family is traced from this couple forward.
  15.         John d. 1833.  Sallie died 1840.  Shes does not appear in the 1840
  16.         census for either Madison or Jefferson Co.

  18. To locate parents of John and Sallie I've looked at two different versions of
  19. R. I. vital records, DAR and  other early lineage groups, numerous books
  20. on RI, checked the country historian for DeRuyter, both  when the town was
  21. in Chenango and Co. as well as Madison Co.  My research on the Dye famiy
  22. begins with a pilgrim line ca 1650 forward to the family of
  23. Daniel and Martha Nichols Dye m.1766.  The couple had 7 children including
  24. a John P. Apparently 3 or 4 of the couple's children left RI since no
  25. records on them are found while there  are records of other children.
  26. Also these names appear in central NY census records.

  28. >For the Rhodes family, a Walter Rhodes married Mary Hill in 1758.  They
  29. had 13 children. A Mary Hill is reported to have died in 1787.  Also a
  30. Walter Rhodes died in the 1780's leaving a wife Mary.

  32. >A Rhodes family, following the death of the mother, including 13
  33. children moved to New Berlin, NY a village currently in Chenango Co. but at
  34. that time in Montgomery Co.
  35.  
  36. >From the Chenango historian I was given information that John P. married
  37. Sallie Rhodes, had several children and moved to western NY.
  38.  
  39. >From the DAR I learned both Daniel Dye and Walter Rhodes served in the
  40. Rev. War.  Walter was a sergeant in RI and Daniel a soldier in Ct.
  41. Also that John P. Dye married Sallie Rhodes, had a son Nathan.  Nathan's
  42. daughter Harriet claimed lineage through John P. to Daniel and not through
  43. Walter.

  46. could be this many couples with the same name.

  48. Hopefully, someone will have some ideas  on where else to search.  I do
  49. plan to write to the National Archives for information.

  51. Does anyone know who could use land grants soldiers received for their
  52. service during the REv. War.  There was a section of Madison Co. called
  53. the Holland Land grant, very long and narrow and small.  It includes the
  54. area where these families lived. Is there any way to find out who was
  55. awarded land.

  57. >To add one last piece of confusion, there was a Rhodes family in
  58. Rensaleer Co. many with the names of Walter's children.

  60. BUT!! Walter Rhodes does not appear in any NY census, and he died in 1813.
  61.       John also does not appear in a NY census until 1820.
