- For some time I feel like I've been butting my head against a stone wall.
- In trying to trace one line of lineage I can not find the link to the
- previous generation. Am looking for ideas, suggestions for other searching.
- The story:
-
- According to the family bible,
- John P. Dye b. RI 1764 m.
- Sallie Rhodes b. 1777
- Place and time of marriage unknown. They had one son,
- Rouse Simmons Dye b. 1802 in DeRuyter NY. He m.
- Ximina Hull (b.1804 in Fabius NY) 1833 and moved to Jefferson Co.NY
- The family is traced from this couple forward.
- John d. 1833. Sallie died 1840. Shes does not appear in the 1840
- census for either Madison or Jefferson Co.
-
- To locate parents of John and Sallie I've looked at two different versions of
- R. I. vital records, DAR and other early lineage groups, numerous books
- on RI, checked the country historian for DeRuyter, both when the town was
- in Chenango and Co. as well as Madison Co. My research on the Dye famiy
- begins with a pilgrim line ca 1650 forward to the family of
- Daniel and Martha Nichols Dye m.1766. The couple had 7 children including
- a John P. Apparently 3 or 4 of the couple's children left RI since no
- records on them are found while there are records of other children.
- Also these names appear in central NY census records.
-
- >For the Rhodes family, a Walter Rhodes married Mary Hill in 1758. They
- had 13 children. A Mary Hill is reported to have died in 1787. Also a
- Walter Rhodes died in the 1780's leaving a wife Mary.
-
- >A Rhodes family, following the death of the mother, including 13
- children moved to New Berlin, NY a village currently in Chenango Co. but at
- that time in Montgomery Co.
-
- >From the Chenango historian I was given information that John P. married
- Sallie Rhodes, had several children and moved to western NY.
-
- >From the DAR I learned both Daniel Dye and Walter Rhodes served in the
- Rev. War. Walter was a sergeant in RI and Daniel a soldier in Ct.
- Also that John P. Dye married Sallie Rhodes, had a son Nathan. Nathan's
- daughter Harriet claimed lineage through John P. to Daniel and not through
- Walter.
-
- >>Now if you're not any more confused than I, it seems odd that there
- could be this many couples with the same name.
-
- Hopefully, someone will have some ideas on where else to search. I do
- plan to write to the National Archives for information.
-
- Does anyone know who could use land grants soldiers received for their
- service during the REv. War. There was a section of Madison Co. called
- the Holland Land grant, very long and narrow and small. It includes the
- area where these families lived. Is there any way to find out who was
- awarded land.
-
- >To add one last piece of confusion, there was a Rhodes family in
- Rensaleer Co. many with the names of Walter's children.
-
- BUT!! Walter Rhodes does not appear in any NY census, and he died in 1813.
- John also does not appear in a NY census until 1820.
-
- Thanks for reading through all this and sending ideas.
