  16. [This is Ralph Reid's choice of passage, but from the NRSV.  The NWT
  17. renders /makarios/ as "happy" here.  The traditional rendering is
  18. "blessed".  According to TDNT, in the LXX, it is used to translate a
  19. Heb. word implying a fullness of life, relating to such things as a
  20. wife, beauty, honor, wisdom, and piety.  In the NT it is used for the
  21. distinctive joy which comes through participating in the divine
  22. kingdom.  Modern translations tend to use "happy" in passages such as
  23. the beatitudes, rather than "blessed".  I think this is because in
  24. modern English "blessed" suggests a more narrowly religious meaning
  25. than the Greek word.  However "the glorious good news of the happy
  26. God" just doesn't quite have the right associations for me.  TDNT
  27. comments on this passage: "/makarios/ describes the blessed
  28. transcendence of God."  --clh]
