  11. As I suspected all along, there's been an element of exaggeration
  12. concerning "Black Monday" at Carnegie Mellon.  It was alleged
  13. that all 16 of the second-year students who were cut from CMU's 
  14. acting program in 1981 (and keep in mind that 15 or 16 students 
  15. are *always* cut after the second year) were (effeminate) gay 
  16. men or overweight women.  I had heard independently that only a
  17. couple of the men who were cut were gay (I didn't inquire about 
  18. the overweight women) and so was disinclined to believe stories 
  19. of an anti-gay witchhunt.  Well, I finally read the Theater Week 
  20. article that started this thread, and this is the breakdown of
  21. the 16 students who were cut that was given there:
  22.  
  23.      1) "One girl" who was 30 pounds overweight;
  24.      2) another "girl" who was 40 pounds overweight;
  25.      3) yet another "girl" (whose weight is not remarked on) who
  26.            had a B+ in her acting class as of the midterm;
  27.      4) an effeminate "young man";
  28.      5) his best friend, also gay and effeminate;
  29.      6) the gay man who wrote the article (which, btw, is
  30.            illustrated with a photo of the author in drag);
  31.            there's a distinct possibility that the author is
  32.            the best friend already mentioned.

  34. And that's it.  Two overweight "girls", three (but possibly
  35. only two) gay men, and a "girl" who had a B+ in her acting
  36. class as of the midterm.  There's absolutely nothing about the
  37. other ten (or eleven) students who were cut.  If they were
  38. all gay men or overweight women, it would have added force to 
  39. Scanlan's argument and his whiney tone and victim stance would
  40. have been easier to take.
