-
- Yes - and I think that this has a great deal to do with my reaction
- to this program. The underlying attitudes which are portrayed in, and
- reinforced by, John Inman's character are just a little too real and
- a little too close to home for me. They remind me all too clearly of
- some of the things that I like least about Britain and which to some
- extent contributed to my decision to leave that country.
-
- I suspect that for many American viewers the whole thing seems to
- be so far removed from "reality" that it is much easier to accept it
- as a piece of harmless and mildly amusing entertainment.
-
- Clearly this is all very subjective and it probably says at least as
- much about me as it does about that particular program.
-
- It occurs to me that there is an interesting counterpoint to all
- of this (which may help to dispell any thoughts that I simply don't
- have a sense of humor) - I happen to think that the "Men on Film"
- sketches from "In Living Color" are absolutely hilarious .....
-
- One could argue that they have a similar problem and, on an intellectual
- level, I can understand that some people could react to them in a
- similar way that I react to "Are You Being Served". (but I *still*
- would think they were hilarious....)
