  14. SF Examiner polls are generally conducted by phone.  I imagine a 
  15. fairly small fraction of gays and lesbians are willing to identify
  16. themselves as such when a stranger calls on the phone to ask.  Gay
  17. and lesbian people have enough to fear that I'd be surprised if the
  18. number who are willing to answer such a question is a small percentage
  19. of the population as a whole.

  21. In San Francisco, I don't know where anyone got the idea that gays
  22. and lesbians are represented at 4-5 times the national average here.
  23. I'm sure it's higher than the average, but I don't know where the factor
  24. of four or five was dug up.

  26. Either way, political consultants here assume a much higher proportion
  27. of gays and lesbians than 15%.
