  24. moral code has no place in it for freedom of speech, thought,
  25. religion, or expression; no place for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals;
  26. no place for rational scientific enquiry; and no place for women who'd
  27. prefer not to be barefoot, pregnant and immured in the kitchen.

  29.    Ok, they hold a world view that is probably seriously at odds with
  30.    yours.  They think you are doing something morally wrong in having
  31.    sex with a partner of the same gender as yourself. AND they want to
  32.    make sure that everybody hears about what they have to say about
  33.    it. Are they wrong just because they disagree with you and
  34.    disaprove of something that you hold very dear, or is there more to
  35.    it than that? And what does all this creationism stuff have to do
  36.    with the subject?? Enlighten me.

  38. Again, they want to enforce their oppressive "morality" by law.  Even
  39. if they have a majority, enforcing such an oppressive moral code on
  40. the population at large is a clear case of a tyranny of the majority.

  42. BTW, I do not believe it is possible to avoid legislating morality
  43. entirely.  My point is that the "morality" of the religious right is
  44. such a hateful and narrow thing that enacting it into the law is
  45. clearly evil.

  47. Creationism is relevant as a case in point.  Logic is irrelevant to
  48. these people.  Scientific facts are irrelevant to these people.
  49. Arguments based on the notion of human rights are irrelevant to these
  50. people.  All that they care about is whatever beliefs they happen to
  51. hold at the moment.

  53.    BTW, on the judgement thing - am I not allowed to hold an opinion
  54.    about what other people do just because their activities don't
  55.    affect me? If I don't like what you do does that mean I am judging
  56.    you? Is it ok for me to believe that some things are open to
  57.    personal preference while some other things are not?

  59. If you choose to believe that some behavior on the part of other
  60. consenting adults that does not affect you in the least is "sinful",
  61. "inappropriate", "degenerate", or "bad for them" without compelling
  62. rational evidence supporting your opinion then that belief is a
  63. gratuitous judgement.

  65. I think we all make gratuitous judgements of the above kind, and I'd
  66. say these judgements are nothing more than useless and mostly harmless
  67. mental baggage --- as long as no attempt is made to inflict these
  68. judgements on others.

  70. On the other hand, the religious right think their mental baggage is
  71. "the word of God", and wants to inflict it on everyone.

  73.    I'm not trying to stir up a flame war or poke fun at anyone, but I
  74.    do want to understand. I am often annoyed when I see people talking
  75.    and acting as though sexual immorality were the only kind of
  76.    immorality - ignoring things like greed, corruption, dishonesty and
  77.    all kinds of injustice. But I think maybe you have some other
  78.    concerns?

  82. The bottom line is that while rational people can recognize the
  83. possibility of a legitimate difference of opinion on an issue, a
  84. zealot cannot --- there is only one right answer.
