  18. A case in point -- today's (11/18/92) New York Times reported
  19. on a meeting of Republican state governors.  At a press
  20. conference, a reporter "asked the governors whether they could
  21. succeed in holding together a diverse conservative coalition
  22. without alienating the religious right."

  24.     ...Governor Kirk Fordice of Mississippi took issue with
  25.     the questioner.

  27.     He said the question "seemed to infer that there is a
  28.     demise of Christianity in America," adding, "I totally
  29.     reject that."

  31.     Mr. Fordice went on to say: "The United States of America
  32.     is a Christian nation, which does not in any way infer at
  33.     any time that religious intolerance or any kind of
  34.     particular dogma is being forced on anyone else.  It just
  35.     is a simple fact of life in the United States of America."

  37.     Governor [Carroll A.] Campbell [Jr., of South Carolina]
  38.     then strode to the platform and said: "The value base of
  39.     this country comes from the Judeo-Christian heritage that
  40.     we have, and that is something we need to realize."  He
  41.     added that a study of history showed that "the foundation
  42.     of the country" was based on "a Judeo-Christian heritage."

  44.     When Mr. Campbell returned to his spot on the dais next to
  45.     Mr. Fordice, he said, "I just wanted to add the 'Judeo'
  46.     part."

  48.     Mr. Fordice responded tartly, "If I wanted to do that I
  49.     would have done it."
