  12. Spoilers. Not that there's anything to ruin...

  14. Went to see it tonight. This is one of those rare movies I really
  15. got excited about, because it took Winona (definitely one of my
  16. favorite actors) and put her in a role unlike any other she'd
  17. done before. I was hoping she'd prove herself wonderful, and show
  18. that her range went beyond the wry troubled teen type. She was
  19. really good, and I was very glad.
  20. But the rest of the movie really sucked eggs. I've been reading
  21. the original version, and have been enjoying it immensely, but it's
  22. been destroyed by whoeverthefuckdirectedit. It didn't go anywhere;
  23. it was just a confusing mix of sex, period stuff, and comedy. No
  24. blend, and (what really surprised me) no suspense or horror. And
  25. the romance between Mina and Dracula was a really cheap ripoff of
  26. Anne Rice. Bleah, bleah, bleah.
  27. Liked Dracula's hair in the beginning, though, and the youthful
  28. Dracula (with those really twee blue sunglasses), the American
  29. suitor (who I just *knew* would be offed), and the sanitarium
  30. suitor (goatee! Whee!) were all cute.
  31. Keanu was really sad (Look! I have an accent and can pretend to
  32. be dignified! Yay!!!), and it was really tacky to make Lucy a
  33. slut from the start and to make the female vamps such sluts
  34. from hell (though their emergence from the bed was really cool)
  35. was to beat people over then head with the sexual overtones
  36. just a tad too much (and the bare breasts everywhere were just
  37. not right. Vampires aren't sexy for their killer bods, and
  38. they're not to appear human, and to show them with funparts is
  39. to make them appear a lot more common than they are). And they
  40. made Dracula a *fool*; how could he have survived for 400 years
  41. if he kept accidentally making supernatural things happen? Part
  42. of the creepiness of the story is the supernatural existing in
  43. a purely modern world, and you'd think from watching the humans
  44. just accept all this illogic happening that Industry was just a
  45. diversion from voodoo. Really really bad.

  47. In short, go if you admire Winona (and who doesn't?), but don't
  48. go if you're an admirer of the original work.
