-
- I must reluctantly agree. Well, my reluctance is modified
- (without embracing the idea of malice, of course) to some
- degree by not being at all interested in homogeneous social
- institutions. The conjuncture of ideas and points of view
- seems the most vibrant source of creativity around, and I'd
- hate to think of losing that. I'm reading up a lot lately
- on unpopular speech, so these ideas are circulating
- upstairs.
-
- >But it is remarkable that the vile speeches by Buchanan et

- >very general consensus in the newspapers.
-
- It certainly seems true, doesn't it? Buchanan and the
- inflexibility of the abortion plank. But as the campaign
- got near the end, these issues seemed to matter less as
- pocketbook issues assumed the dominant role in voters'
- minds. So I retain my reserve about how much and for how
- long such malice has been demoralized.
-
- >It reminds me of Nixon, who after Brown beat him in Calif.

- >If Buchanan ever actually wants to get elected to anything,
- >he'll have to cut out queer-baiting.
-
- I sure hope you're right, but just tonight on NBC News, the
- subject of Clinton's conflicts with Congresscritters over a
- new policy on the military ame up. I think it's all going
- to turn out to be a *lot* more difficult than most of us
- have been thinking. This (and the resurgence of the OCA in
- Oregon, also reported on the news tonight) suggests that the
- malicious people themselves are not particularly demoralized.
