- Copper tools, only. Perhaps the reason that this step up to bronze
- and iron wasn't made by the American Indians was because native copper
- was relatively plentiful in North America, unlike Europe. (One of the
- ways to determine whether a copper implement is European or Indian
- in origin is to examine for evidence of sulfur impurities in the
- copper -- that usually indicates European origin, because it was
- smelted from CuS.) Clearly, if you don't have a need to smelt copper
- ore, you aren't like to develop bronze. If you don't develop bronze,
- you are unlikely to develop the strategies that make iron ore smelting
- possible.

- draft animals. Indians had the wheel, but it was of little value
- without a large draft animal.
