  34. The acquisition of a Ph.D. in mathematics may be taken as serious interest
  35. in becoming a research mathematician, although not all go on to do so.
  36. The American Mathematical Society has been keeping data on American citizens
  37. who do get a Ph.D. in math *by gender* since the 1973-74 academic year.

  39. The trend of this data supports L. Levine; it is taken from the November 1992
  40. issue of "Notices of the American Mathematical Society":
