- 11/16 S Korean Opposition Leader Says Yeltsin Meddling In Election
-
- SEOUL -(AP-DJ)--Top opposition leader Kim Dae-jung accused Russian President
- Boris Yeltsin Tuesday of meddling in South Korea's presidential elections by
- giving a favor to a pro-government candidate.
- 'President Yeltsin is committing a very serious mistake,' Kim said at a news
- conference, referring to a scheduled breakfast meeting between the Russian
- leader and Kim Young-sam, presidential nominee of Korea's majority Democratic
- Liberal Party.
- Yeltsin, due here Wednesday for a three-day official visit, has scheduled a
- breakfast meeting with Kim Young-sam, not with opposition candidates, on
- Friday.
- Kim Young-sam, nominee of President Roh Tae-woo's former ruling Democratic
- Liberal Party, is locked in close competition with Kim Dae-jung for upcoming
- presidential voting, scheduled for Dec. 18.
- Kim Dae-jung, nominee of the nation's No. 1 opposition Democratic Party,
- said Yeltsin's breakfast meeting with his opponent could give the impression
- that the Russian leader supports him.
- 'Regardless of his intentions, Mr. Yeltsin's decision to meet candidate Kim
- Young-sam is a careless decision, for which I must express my regrets,' Kim
- Dae-jung said.
- The Russian Embassy in Seoul said the breakfast meeting was arranged simply
- because Yeltsin would not be able to see Kim Young-sam when he visits Korea's
- National Assembly on Thursday. During the visit, Yeltsin will see other major
- candidates, who are all National Assembly members.
- Kim Young-sam quit the National Assembly in September, saying he would
- concentrate on presidential campaign.
