- Since this matter keeps coming up, I would like to mention that in the
- medieval discussions of tzitzit, one text addresses the issue of
- attaching them to head coverings. An opinion is stated that they
- (tzitzit) are *not* necessary because head coverings are not
- obligatory.(!) Or words to that effect. Before anyone gets excited
- about this, let me hasten to add that this is just one source, that I
- am *not* claiming that it is authoritative, nor am I claiming that it
- has any great significance in halakhic discussion. I just thought
- it was kind of fun.
-
- One other disclaimer: I've been asked by private e-mail to upload some
- sources on the head covering issue, and I will be happy to do so as
- soon as I can free up some time. (Since this is hardly a work-related
- issue, I have to do it from home on a cranky slow computer via a noisy
- telephone line.) But I happened to notice that someone has already
- (presumably) scanned in a CCAR responsa article, and I believe that we
- would all be better off if you could see the original article instead
- of my musings on it. Therefore, if that person would be willing to scan
- in Lauterbach's article on kippa from the CCAR of 1928 (believe it or
- not still standing as the most comprehensive discussion in English of
- the subject-- or at least through 1973 which is as far as my literature
- search went), I'd be quite grateful. If this doesn't happen soon, I'll
- summarize the article and add my comments.
-
- By the way, the fact that I read the CCAR responsa does not mean
- that I identify with Reform. I do not, but I'm delighted to find good
- scholarship wherever I can.
