- Musashimaru's loss came to shake off the dead-lock, leaving only three
- wrestlers in the top-two slots. Musashi charged as usual against
- Tomoefuji, who is suffering from a lingering knee injury. The young
- maegashira countered and both wrestlers were soon in the middle of the
- dohyo, pulling and pushing. Tomoefuji moved forward, bringing the
- Hawaiian on one leg at the edge (a not so uncommon sight). When the
- sekiwake countered, Tomoefuji just had to slip his hand on the sash
- and, using his foe's momentum, nicely spin him around and down. In the day's
- final bout, Akebono beat Kyokudozan, who tried to escape sideways at the
- outset. A year ago, the young ozeki would have been caught off balance,
- but he showed remarkable stability, grabbed his foe's sash thanks to
- his long arms, reaching over the shoulders, and proceeded to march
- Kyoku out despite his attempts to trip him. Excellent control!
- Kotonoshiki needed but a handful of thrusts to Daishoho's chest to send
- the no. 1 maegashira off the ring. Takahanada extended his streak to 8
- by beating Kotonowaka after a long face-off in the middle of the ring.
- He eventually managed to push out the young and quite bulky maegashira,
- in a remarkable showing of strength and technique combined. In juryo,
- newly promoted Tomonohana is now sharing the lead with veteran Komafudo
- at 9-3, while Argentine and fellow new juryo Hoshiandesu failed at his
- third attempt to reach kachi-koshi, now standing at 7-5
