- Some private e-mail conversations indicate to me the following
- stereotype views about Tamils.
-
- > 1. Tamils prefer to be atheists, beat Hindu idols with Chappals.
-
- Yes, these ideas were expressed by individuals. That only shows their
- tolerance to ideas. The reality is TN probably has more percentage
- of temple going people than any of the neighbouring states. It
- certainly has more per capita temples than neighboring region.
- No wonder most Hindu temples in the new world are initiatated by Tamils.
-
- The only state government supporting Hindu Temple building activity
- in the new world has been the DMK/ADMK led TN. The others including
- the center hide under the 'secular' blanket. TTD aids provided the
- temple is purely Venkateswara (no other main gods).
-
- > 2. The TN governments are forcing Tamil worship in Temples.
-
- Nothing can be further from reality. Methods of Tamil worship have
- existed 100s of years before these governments and parties. In fact,
- there are instances, of Tamil worship being banned and replaced
- exclusively by Sanskrit worship. Now, trying to get OPTIONAL worship
- in the language understood by people, is considered fanatism.
- There is NO movement to ban worship in Sanskrit.
-
- > 3. Tamils are fanatics.
-
- One always finds more Tamils in non-Tamil cultural events than the
- other way around. TN is the ONLY state in India where the study of
- the state language is not compulsary. It has 15% minority of other
- linguistic groups, who could maintain it for generations even in
- deep interior. On the other hand, the minority Tamils in neighbouring
- states are just in border areas, who ended up there while re-drawing
- the state borders. One finds hardly any Tamils still left in the deep
- interior.
-
- I hope at least the highly educated people do not carry these views.
- These views, quite possibly have been propagated by some Tamils
- themselves, in an effort to enhance their personal image, as one of
- the few nice people among a group of bad people.
