- Could someone please help me out with some information on Canadian
- government institutions? I teach World Geography in San Antonio,
- Texas, and am trying to prepare a lesson on comparative governments..
- My questions are fairly specific...
-
- 1) The Senate - a) How are the seats apportioned amongst the provinces?
- b) Are the Senators elected or appointed? If appointed, by whom?
- c) What powers does the Senate have?
- (I have a student who has recently moved down here from Toronto,
- and he never even heard of the Senate, so I don't imagine it is
- very powerful....)
-
- 2) The Judiciary - a) Who appoints the judges? b) Do they serve for
- life? c) To what court, in the final instance, would citizens
- appeal if they felt themselves to be victims of an unconsti-
- tutional law? d) What is the overall structure of the federal
- judiciary?
-
- 3) The Northwest Territories - Has this been divided into two
- territories to be self-ruled by the Native peoples? I read about this
- plan last January, and haven't seen any follow-up.
-
- If you feel these questions are too boring for the conference, please
- answer by email to jmayer@tenet.edu . Thanks!
