  17. of charge on the Somalian crisis.  Details below.  Pardon repeat of my
  18. earlier urgent action message that begins this post--I left it i *just in case*
  19. someone might have missed the earlier post and not know what the faxing
  20. was for.

  47.    (November 19) MacNeil/Lehrer said tonight the White House will
  48. discuss serious action for Somalia tomorrow.
  49.  
  50.    Please call the White House Comment Line--202-456-1111, between 9am
  51.    and 5pm Eastern time, tomorrow.
  52.    Or fax any time (starting tonight) at 202-456-2461.

  54.    Please urge massive increases in food aid and medical supplies.
  55. Remember, even Mohamed Sahnoun said things were getting better since
  56. the aid increased, despite the looting.  And, he said the amount now
  57. being delivered is 30,000 tons a month.  60,000 tons a month are
  58. needed, so there is plenty of room for improvement there.
  59.    The main topic of discussion will be military intervention.  I plan
  60. to urge increased UN troops, deployed swiftly.  I think that insofar
  61. as outside military force can cause some problems, UN troops are less
  62. provocative than US marines.
  63.    On the M/L News Hour, the former US Ambassador to Somalia, Crigler,
  64. said "the American people have shown that they favor helping Somalia."
  65. It's important that we continue to show this support.
  66.    Hope everybody will take the time to make the quick phone call or
  67. send a one-paragraph fax.
  68.    Thanks so much.  Events seem to have shown that the online
  69. community has made a big difference for Somalia--I hope we can act in
  70. great numbers tomorrow and perhaps get some really helpful action out
  71. of the White House.

  89.                  SNA/USC LEADER AYDIID: THE SAVIMBI OF SOMALIA?

  91.    (SNU, Uppsala, November 19). In a statment issued by the SNA/USC
  92. chairman Mohamed Farah Aydiid in Mogadishu November 14, Aydiid spells
  93. out his position regarding the recent shooting at the airport and
  94. attack on the aid workers at Gesira beach.
  95.    He explains that the "occupation of the airport by UN troops" has
  96. not been "authorized by the USC or SNA authorities". He claims that
  97. the deal struck between UNOSOM office and a USC secrutity officer is
  98. invalid as it has not respected USC/SNA chain of command. He goes on
  99. to claim that "the unilateral decision by Ambassador Kittani [to take
  100. control of the airport] was unnecessary". He adds that the UN presence
  101. in the airport "jeopardizes the humanitarian assistance in Somalia and
  102. is a threat to the peace and stability in Somalia".
  103.    In an appended but unsigned 12-point declaration, UN and NGO staff
  104. are accused of acting more as tourist in the country than as
  105. professional relief workers. It is also said that the world should
  106. send food directly to Aydiid rather than through the UN. The
  107. declaration claims that UN have instigated the recent clashes between
  108. the constituent members of the SNA alliance. This apparently refers to
  109. the recent fighting between the Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM) based
  110. in the Ogden clan and Aydiid's United Somali congress.
