  21. London - President FW de Klerk will stay in power after March 1995 - the
  22. constitutional date for elections - and rule with "moderate blacks" in
  23. his cabinet if there is no agreement on power-sharing, says a report in
  24. yesterday's London Sunday Times.

  26. According to "National Party sources" Mr De Klerk has indicated he will
  27. use recent legislation to stay in office rather than hold a whites-only
  28. general election.

  30. In this event Mr De Klerk "would appoint a number of moderate blacks to
  31. his cabinet, in an attempt to deflect criticism that he was continuing
  32. white rule".

  34. The report, however, adds that during an exclusive interview, Mr De
  35. Klerk refused to be drawn on the subject.

  37. Mr De Klerk said he saw a convergence of views and predicted 1993 would
  38. be the "crucial" year.

  40. He told the Sunday Times there would be no deal with the ANC unless it
  41. totally accepted his "fundamental requirements".

  43. "I am flexible on details but I will not say 'yes' to a winner-takes-all
  44. constitution.

  46. "The new constitution must effectively prevent an Adolf Hitler or Idi
  47. Amin from gaining power in South Africa."
