-
- The mall is a good place to start, especially if you know nothing about
- diamonds. They'll explain the concepts of cut, clarity, color and size to
- you, and let you look at stones through a lupe. Look at a really cheap
- stone, then look at the best stone they have. You'll be amazed at the
- difference.
-
- You will most likely pay through the nose at the mall, plus they usually
- carry only run of the mill stuff, so if you want something unusual,
- you'll need to special order it, or go elsewhere.
-
- NYC has a 'diamond district', with many retail stores on the ground floor,
- and wholesale cutters in the suites high above the stores. I was
- fortunate enough to know a cutter who gave me an incredible deal on
- an emerald cut stone, 1 carat, VS1, color F/G, white gold setting for
- under $3500. It has been twice appraised for much more than that amount.
-
- While it may be worth coming to NYC to get your ring, be aware that there
- are scams everywhere, as well as crooks with razor blades looking
- for unsuspecting grooms-to-be...It's not a jungle or anything, but you
- do need to be careful.
