  18. The mall is a good place to start, especially if you know nothing about
  19. diamonds.  They'll explain the concepts of cut, clarity, color and size to
  20. you, and let you look at stones through a lupe.  Look at a really cheap
  21. stone, then look at the best stone they have.  You'll be amazed at the
  22. difference.

  24. You will most likely pay through the nose at the mall, plus they usually
  25. carry only run of the mill stuff, so if you want something unusual, 
  26. you'll need to special order it, or go elsewhere.

  28. NYC has a 'diamond district', with many retail stores on the ground floor,
  29. and wholesale cutters in the suites high above the stores.  I was
  30. fortunate enough to know a cutter who gave me an incredible deal on
  31. an emerald cut stone, 1 carat, VS1, color F/G, white gold setting for
  32. under $3500.  It has been twice appraised for much more than that amount.

  34. While it may be worth coming to NYC to get your ring, be aware that there
  35. are scams everywhere, as well as crooks with razor blades looking
  36. for unsuspecting grooms-to-be...It's not a jungle or anything, but you 
  37. do need to be careful.
