  17.     Being a Finnish foreigner in the States I can't resist posting this
  18.     column published in Suomen Kuvalehti some five years ago. It was 
  19.     written    by Neil Hardwick (is he still in Finland?).

  24.          The dark side of the moon
  25.          
  26.          Readers  are  asked to note that Winter Behaviour comes into
  27.          force  in Finland on October 1st., i.e. next Wednesday. From
  28.          that  day  forward  the  following  rules,  regulations  and
  29.          conventions  are  to be observed. Cheerful banter with shop-
  30.          assistants  and  waiters  shall  cease forthwith. If silence
  31.          cannot  be  maintained,  surly bad-temper is recommended for
  32.          both  parties.  It is especially to be born in mind that, in
  33.          all  establishments  where  intoxicating liquors are served,
  34.          the  customer  is  sometimes  *right*  during the perod May-
  35.          September,  but  *always  wrong*  during the period October-
  36.          April.  It  is  not  permissable  to  smile at people in the
  37.          street,  even  if  they  smile  at  you  first.  Casual good
  38.          behaviour  may  give  offence,  and  is  always  liable  to
  39.          misunderstanding.  In  the  event of accidental eye-contact,
  40.          *do not panic*! Continue as if nothing had happened and move
  41.          away.  If  this  is not possible, for example at a bus stop,
  42.          stare  hard  at  something  else  eg.  the  time-table,  an
  43.          advertisement  hoarding,  a  nearby  parked car (assuming of
  44.          course  there is no one in it). If the eye contact continues
  45.          and  appears  deliberate,  inform  the  police.  Recommended
  46.          colours  for  clothing are grey, black and anaemic shades of
  47.          blue.  Brigher  colours  are  permitted  for children and in
  48.          plastic  raincoats  (women  only).  Upon  dialling  a  wrong
  49.          telephone   number   in   error,   the  summer  practice  of
  50.          apologizing  for one's mistake ceases. Winter Practice is to
  51.          maintain  silence  for  a  short period and then replace the
  52.          receiver. The Background music for television advertisements
  53.          shall  consist  of  cellos  playing slow melodies in a minor
  54.          key.  Chirpy  tunes on the accordion are banned (thank God).

  56.          Drunks are no longer to be humoured. Special regulations for
  57.          public  transport:  It  is  forbidden to sing, whistle, hum,
  58.          fidget  or  talk  (except  to  oneself  in  a  low  mutter).

  60.          Passengers  seated  next  to a window shall stare out of it,
  61.          whether  the  vehicle be in motion or not. Passengers seated
  62.          next to the gangway are permitted to look forwards, provided
  63.          they  take  due  care  not  to  focus  their  eyes  on other
  64.          passengers.  The  seats  near  the  doors  are  reserved for
  65.          drunks. Special caution is required when attempting to leave
  66.          a  window seat. There may be someone sitting between you and
  67.          the  gangway.  Do  *not*  attempt  to  speak to this person.
  68.          Simply  squeeze  past  in silence, taking care to inflict as
  69.          little physical injury as possible.

  71.          Exceptions  The  only exceptions to these rules are the pre-
  72.          Christmas  office  parties  known as 'pikkujoulut', at which
  73.          jollity  is  COMPULSORY.  These regulations are in operation
  74.          until  April  30th,  1987,  upon which date Summer Behaviour
  75.          comes into force once more.
