- Hello. I don't usually read this newsgroup (sorry). Please forgive if this is
- posted in the wrong place...
-
- There's been a debate going on in rec.pets.dogs that is driving me *nuts*, over
- whether or not one must have a model (or a guess, or knowledge, or whatever) of
- what a dog is *thinking* in order successfully to train it, or whether just
- being able to observe its *behavior* is enough.
-
- E.G., "Bowser, Sit." (Bowser sits.) "Bowser, Stay." (Bowser stays for
- increasing lengths of time, praised for staying correctly, not punished for
- breaking the stay.) Enter squirrel (or cat, or whatever). Trainer sees
- intruding animal before Dog sees it.
-
- OK, Group A says that the (good) trainer has to know that Bowser *will* think,
- "yum, squirrel (or cat or whatever)" BEFORE Bowser actually thinks it, in order
- to avoid allowing Bowser to engage in incorrect behavior in the first place.
- Trainer then requires Bowser to hold sit/stay (physically, if necessary) w/out
- giving Bowser the CHANCE to disobey.
-
- Group B says thats ridiculous. It doesn't matter what the dog *thinks*. The
- only thing that matters is what the dog *does*. So dog training needs no
- doggie psychology, only behaviorism. If Bowser misbehaves, punish him. If he
- behaves correctly, praise him. Trainer doesn't need to KNOW or CARE what any
- alleged *reason* for the behavior is (squrrel, cat, etc.). In other words,
- CAUSES of behavior don't matter; all that matters is that behavior is correct.
-
- Surely someone since Pavlov must have settled this already, no? Or is it too
- stupid to matter?
-
