- Potemkin was a "Pre-Dreadnought" Battleship. As such it was a major
- unit of the Black Sea Fleet during Tsarist times. The Tsarist (and
- other minor) navies did not have a lot of Dreadnought (ie all-big-gun)
- Battleships in WWI, so the older ships retained much of their
- importance.

- In the major navies there were also large numbers of ships of similar
- classes, however they tended to be relegated to secondary duties,
- leaving the battle line to the dreadnoughts.
