- There are 10 Yankee I-class remaining in service. Some have been
- converted to SSN, SSGN, and Notch SSGN. Yankees have seen a lot of
- service, and some mishaps. A Yankee suffered a missile propellant
- explosion while submerged 600 miles east of Bermuda in October 1986.
- The sub surfaced, and after ventilation failed, the crew was removed
- by a merchant ship and the subs was taken in tow. The sub sank on
- October 6. The Soviets said three crewman were killed, and several
- injured.
