  20. Axis submarines begin attacking the Torch convoys.  The transport Thomas
  21. Stone is torpedoed and badly damaged; the troops aboard are taken off on
  22. landing craft.

  24. French General Giraud, who earlier escaped a German prison, is rescued from
  25. the French coast by the submarine HMS Seraph and taken to Gibraltar, where
  26. he meets with General Eisenhower to discuss his role in Operation Torch.
  27. Giraud initially believes he has been called to lead the entire operation
  28. and only reluctantly agrees to oversee the civil administration of French
  29. Northwest Africa after its conquest.
