-
- Axis submarines begin attacking the Torch convoys. The transport Thomas
- Stone is torpedoed and badly damaged; the troops aboard are taken off on
- landing craft.
-
- French General Giraud, who earlier escaped a German prison, is rescued from
- the French coast by the submarine HMS Seraph and taken to Gibraltar, where
- he meets with General Eisenhower to discuss his role in Operation Torch.
- Giraud initially believes he has been called to lead the entire operation
- and only reluctantly agrees to oversee the civil administration of French
- Northwest Africa after its conquest.
