- This is what the original poster wanted to avoid.
-
- If I recall correctly, the Woodsmith design is a variant of Spielman's
- design, with the router mounted horizontally on a vertically swinging
- board. This *is* what Stan was talking about, I believe.

- The big disadvantages are:
- 1) You have to pivot the wood into the bit. For deep mortises that aren't
- very long, this is tricky.
-
- 2) If the mortises are deep you need multiple passes. A plunge router is
- the fastest and easiest way to make mulitple passes on multiple cuts
- and still end up with the same depth on all the mortises. You could
- mount a plunge router to the swinging board, which is what Stan
- recommended, but you'd end up using the plunge feature only as a means
- to reset bit depth. You'd still end up swinging the wood into the
- spinning bit.
-
- 3) As for stop blocks, if the piece being mortised is longer than your
- router table, where do you put the other stop? I recently cut mortises
- for a crib, where the pieces being cut were over 4' long. Is your router
- table big enough? Mine isn't.
