- Don't sail above your ability!
-
- I went there for 2 weeks last year (intented to) but had to leave after 4 days,
- The hard-rock cafe comp was on at hookipa but I wanted to sail so I went to the
- beach to the left (beach? did I say beach?) needless (needles?) to say, after
- numerous minor cuts received when trying to launch and land, and after some
- unreal wave rides, I broke a fin when launching, got dragged off the reef and had to
- try and grab the reef with one hand and the board with the other. Then, to avoid
- getting worked I had to scramble up the side of the shelf and carry my gear back.
-
- I went to hospital with multiple lacerations and many stupid bloodly sea-urchin
- spines.
-
- Apart from that I had an awesome time but it really put a downer on things.
- Walking through the airports with bandages and showercaps on my feet was pretty
- fun too.
-
- I rented my car from dollar rentals (I think, it's something like that, it's
- tucked away on the small road near the airport, they even supplied roof racks
- and gave me some money back when I returned early.)
-
- Most the shops on maui give excellent hire deals, they can't afford not to,
- you can usually change equipment to.
-
- If you get the chance, go for a rip on a floaty board from hookipa to kanaha,
- it's really cool.
-
- Winds are pretty consistent the times I've been there, I think summer is the
- high-wind/low swell and winter is not so high wind and big swell with a moderation
- of both in spring and autumn. I went there last in june and there was enough swell
- to hold nice 3/4 mast (front of wave) waves on the reefs and 20+ knot winds that
- increased steadily all afternoon. A 5 meter sail is huge for these guys.
-
- Great food at sizzlers salad bar (has pastas tacos etc, all you can eat $8)
-
- Check out the nightlife at Lahaina, Angulo's band plays there, lots of art galleries
- which are really cool when you're smashed.
-
- Hang loose, AND DON'T WOBBLE YOUR HAND IF YOU DARE TO SHAKA!
-
- I haven't seen the results but have heard nasty stories.
-
- Also check out Cassonovas in the small town south of Paia (towards the crater), it
- has never failed to house a bevy of gorgeous babes on fridays.
-
- Tell me how your trip goes. I've been too busy to return this year but I'm going
- again next year.
-
- Have fun and cut a few waves for me.
