- I was really impressed with the RCA/ProScan 80 series IDTVs...until I
- started watching them with more & more non-laserdisc sources. They look
- absolutely great on laserdiscs with little motion artifacts, but once you
- start using them with the typical quality of cable source; adding snow,
- sparklies and other grunge to the picture, they start to look pretty bad.
- They can't filter or 'see through' the grunge to the picture like a human
- brain can, so that stuff just gets added into the digital morass... and
- ends up looking much worse than it would without the IDTV processing. I
- know of one consumer reviewer that will not list the ProScan IDTVs in his
- reviews for this reason (but he likes the other non-IDTV ProScans a lot).
- If there was a way to 'turn off the IDTV processing' for the occasional bad
- source, he'd rate it.
-
- True, you can turn up the video noise reduction on the ProScans and it
- helps some, but then the picture loses most, if not all, of it's detail.
-
- The 80 series ProScans are selling pretty well here in Silicon Valley from
- what I've heard. An unrelated problem I have with the ProScan line is that
- RCA only markets the set through local dealers and you cannot get it
- through mail order at a discount. Personally, I don't think it's worth the
- extra money I'd have to pay to a local dealer.
-
- The Perfect Vision loved the Toshiba CZ3299Z for it's detail, colors and
- smooth film like quality, but they have yet to review the ProScan IDTVs.
- I'm pretty sure they only rated the set with laserdisc or satellite
- sources. Wish it was more real world testing.
-
- So, I'd say if your cable source is perfect or you watch mostly laserdiscs,
- get an IDTV and be happy with the smoother picture (especially at the
- liquidating price of the Toshiba).
