- I bought a Sony VCR SLV585 because of Sony's excellent
- reputation with local servicemen. I've had it exactly one
- year and have been very satisfied. It's had a year of hard
- use and performs flawlessly. Last week I was looking at VCR's
- out of curiosity, and saw a GOLDSTAR hifi stereo with jog-shuttle
- which was featured as one of the store's best VCR's for sale.
- I didn't get the model number, but it was loaded with features and I
- commented to a salesman that it seemed to resemble my Sony, but
- with more and at a smaller price. He said that's because it IS
- a Sony. He says Sony has no license to make VHS machines and
- has to have someone else make their VHS machines for them, and
- for at least 2 years Goldstar has made Sony VHS.
- I had always considered Goldstar to be junk, and said so.
- The salesman then told a story about another customer who wouldn't
- buy Goldstar, but would buy Sony, which they didn't sell.
- The salesman and customer got into a heated argument, and the customer
- left, bought a Sony, and made a point of bringing his new
- Sony into the store and taking the cover off to prove it
- wasn't Goldstar, and then got doubly pissed when it turned out the
- store was right and the Sony was, in fact, a Goldstar.
- Looking inside the tape door, it is almost identical to my Sony,
- and the transport operates identically. The salesman also pointed
- out that the Goldstar has more motors, fewer belts, less plastic,
- more heft, etc. than most other machines, and in his opinion the
- Goldstar is built like a battleship relative to most high-end jap brands,
- and at a fraction of the cost.
- This has caused me to pause and reset. Is my Sony really not made by Sony?
- Does Goldstar make Sony? Is Goldstar really that good? Is one wasting
- money by bypassing Goldstar to get a jap brand? Would someone who knows
- please advise?
