- I'd like to know if anyone has any opinions on the up coming (1994?)
- release of the DirecTv Direct Broadcast Satallite (DBS) system from Hughes
- et. al.
-
- Has anyone heard of this?
-
- Is anyone interested in such a scheme?
-
-
- A response of this post in rec.video.satellite was given by Bob Vogel:
-
- > At last. Would you be able, in yourspare time, ofcourse, to write up a basic
- > techncial overview of the current directbroadcast ACTUALLY IN USE in Japan?
-
- Sure I'll give you what knowledge I have but my knowledge is limited to the
- downlink side of things.

-
- The system in Japan is, as best I can tell, about 4 years old. The have one
- sat with two transponders being used for direct broadcast of TV signals.
- The carrier is at 1.202 GHz which means a convenient, small aperture
- downlink antenna can be used.
-
- Most users of this system have an 18cm dia. dish, but we here at Panasonic
- are also selling a 10cm diagnal flat antenna.
-
- Currently there are only three channels available. One is scrambled: simple
- digital scheme. The other two are "free." One is actually NHK which is
- similar to PBS in the states except they extract a fee. The other is a
- local channel.
-
- This NHK channel is currently my only source of US programming; I get US
- news on tape delay: ABC World Report, Nightline, McNeil-Leher, etc.
-
- > Either a post in rec.video etc. or e-mail back to me would suit.
-
- Well, I'll do both just to stir up some communication.
-
- > Thanks for your most interesting comments on US DBS plans.
-
- Ah, not that's what I really want to here. What do people think about the
- US DBS system? I wonder what it's gonna take for it to be accepted.
-
- Sayonara.

- Disclaimer: Yes I have a professional interest in this scheme, but I'm just
- an engineer making the components and doin' some market research on the
- side :)
