- My current favorite 35"s for the money are the ProScans (from RCA/Thomson).
- The 35150, which can be found for around $2K has a very good picture and
- has nice features like PIP (no 2nd tuner though), channel guide, good comb
- filter, Dolby Surround etc. They have two 35" IDTVs also (35180/35680),
- which adds in addition to the line doubling, Dolby ProLogic, an elegant
- menu system, a program scheduler, 2nd tuner for PIP and logos for channel
- labling among other niceties. The 35180 goes for around $2800, the 35680,
- $3000 (difference is tabletop vs. cabinet model).

- There seems to be a lot of disagreement over the quality of the IDTVs and
- whether the picture is any good. I tend to think it's very good and smooth
- with a decent source like laserdisc, but on really bad signals the picture
- will look quite bad with a lot of digital artifacts without cranking up the
- video noise reduction. I wish TPV would do a review of these sets, I'd
- like to hear their opinion (Jim Millick are you listening? ;) ).
-
- Unfortunately one cannot find ProScans from discount or mail order houses.
- RCA just won't do business with the line that way, claiming that the added
- value of sales/service from a local dealer is too important. I tend to
- disagree with paying extra for basically no reason and wrote them a letter
- to that fact. Haven't received any kind of reply. This is an interesting
- trend in TV sales as the Pioneer Elite and Sony XBR^2 lines are being
- treated in a similar fashion: no discounts. (though after January Sony will
- supposedly allow discounting of the Squareds.)
-
- Anyway, if you don't mind paying near retail for a TV, seek out the
- ProScans, they are definitely worth the search.
