- How about North Wales instead of the South?
- You could travel along the North coast and pick a town in which to stay, like
- Llandudno ( pron. hlan-did-no {wait for the flames on that !![Cymru am byth]})
- which is mostly a seaside resort. It can have a certain charm in the off
- season, if the weather is nice(!?!). Further west is Caernarfon, which you
- will need a bus (or car) as well as the train to get to. If you can bring
- yourself to hiring a car, the mountains of North Wales are well worth seeing in
- the winter: I can personally recommend Cwm Idwal, if you like hill walking.
- (TAKE WARM CLOTHES AND GOOD WALKING SHOES )
- On the island of Anglesey (Ynys Mon Mam Cymru) is the town of:
- Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantisiliogogogoch, which I am told,
- has ruined many a spell checker.
- Further down the coast is Porthmadog, home to the Ffestiniog Railway,
- which probably won't be running in January, but if it is, it make for a
- pleasant afternoon ride, sort of a miniature Durango & Silverton.
- Portmerion, (just South of Porthmadog) is an Italianate village (where
- they filmed the cult series "The Prisoner" with Patrick McGoohan in the '60s)
- They also make nice pottery there.
- I would make my decision based on the weather, realising that January
- can be the cruellest month.
- If the weather is going to be dismal, I would tend to gravitate to the
- South-East and visit Cambridge, or Salisbury (probably the former because it
- offers more "indoor type" things and doesn't require cross-London travel)
-
- Like the rest of my countrymen, I could go on and on with somewhat dubious
- commentary, but I won't.
